Has Common Sense Been Replaced by Rushing?
It’s a hectic run here, go there, do that, type world that many small businesses enjoy. I know we don’t enjoy it but it seems to be the way of life. Because of all our rushing to get work accomplished or be at our child’s events, sometimes it appears as if common sense is left behind.
We all seem to be carrying some type of small, or even a big, gadget to do our jobs. It may be our laptop computer, a digital camera, a MP3 player and no one would leave home or office without a cellphone. The one thing we don’t want to happen is to have that device lost or stolen.
Laptop computers, portable storage devices and cellphones may have critical and valuable information stored in them. It wouldn’t just be a shame if they were lost, but could be damaging to business.
Many of the following items fall under common sense, but sometimes it does take that gentle reminder to remember to do them. All will help protect our gadgets from thief.
• Keep them in sight.
Don’t leave your laptop unattended on the table while you get that second cup of coffee.
• Use bags and carrying cases that don’t advertise their contents.
Computer bags may be handy, but they let everyone know there’s a computer inside.
• Secure devices.
Don’t leave them clearly visible in a hotel room, use the hotel safe or a security lock/chain wrapped around an unmovable object.
• When leaving them in a vehicle, secure them in the trunk.
• Keep the serial numbers in a safe place.
You’ll need the number to file a police report and insurance claims.
Life is busy enough doing the things that need to be done. You don’t need to add replacing a stolen device to your to-do list.
