Term: Spam

When thinking about what is Spam, I am reminded of the phrase, “I’m not sure how to define pornography, but I know it when I see it.” In many ways spam is the same way.

One way to describe Spam is that it is any unwanted and unsolicited message. The most common is a message sent to your email in box that is an advertisement, whether it’s a product you may need or want or not, that is unwelcomed.

Spam can also be considered as sending an off topic message to an online group.

Some even consider jokes and other such emails from friends, associates and relatives as spam.

Email is not the only place that Spam can be sent or received. Think about a telemarketer leaving a voice message. This can be considered as spam. As can an advertisement sent via Fax.

As I said it’s hard to define, but I know it when I see it.

And as with pornography everyone’s opinion on it is different.
