Term: DESI Strip
DESI Strip
This is the indicator device (in older systems usually a piece of paper) informing the user of the function of a button on a telephone. Short for DESIgnation Strip. Typical usage are telephone number or extension, Call Forward, Transfer, Release (RLS).
When a technician informs someone that they are to ‘DESI the phone’ they are saying that they have been instructed to put these indicator strips on the phone.
When using paper strips, manufacturers may have pre-printed strips, however they can be made to say nearly anything that the user wants. This can help users better understand what the button accomplishes.
Many modern systems however have these programmed into the system and will appear on the telephone set’s screen. These may or may not be changeable within the system.
Paper strips can be easily changed by the user, while those programmed in the phone are not. Since paper strips are easily changed, it’s non uncommon for the DESI stripped function to be incorrect.
