Battery Restrictions at Airports

Beginning on January 1, 2008, a new policy went into effect at United States airports. Lithium based batteries will no longer be allowed in checked baggage unless they are already installed in electronic devices. Nearly every current computer laptop batteries as well as some used for cell phone, cameras and other devices use lithium batteries.

Spare lithium batteries will only be allowed to be carried in carry-on bags. However only two spare batteries can be carried on and they must be packed in plastic bags.

The reason for this policy change is that the US Transportation Department’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration will begin treating lithium batteries as an hazardous material. These type of batteries have been known to cause overheating and to catch fire. By having this type of batteries in the carry-on luggage, airline crew members will be better able control a fire, if one should occur.
